Educational awareness camp in Sonada,

Student Welfare Forum (SWF) with its stated goal of providing better means and information to the student community especially to those of the rural areas held an educational awareness meet in Pachchiang.

On 7th June 2010, members of SWF travelled to Santrani High School which is located in the remote village of Pachchiang, Sonada to hold an educational awareness camp. The camp intended to impart first hand information regarding opportunities and requirements of higher education. The meet was conducted through an interactive session with the students of Class XI and XII of the school.

The session began with a brief introduction of SWF and later took up the following issues:

• Overcoming the fear of exams, proper studying routine and ways to write better answers for attaining positive results in the Board Exams.

• Cut-off marks of various colleges in Darjeeling district, along with the criteria for different subjects.

• Career prospects in their respective field of study.

• Requirements for numerous civil service examinations, like PSC, SSC, WBSC and others.

The session ended with a positive feedback and a request for holding such meet in the future. A note should also be mentioned of the school authorities who were very helpful in this regard.

SWF delegation to the school comprised of Dawa Sherpa, Delhi School of Economics (DSE), New Delhi, Chepaul Sherpa of St Xaviers College, Kolkata, Sumeet Agarwal and Naresh Chettri of North Bengal University (NBU).

Future Programs:

SWF in association with the National Book Trust (NBT) intends to hold a book fair in October this year in Kurseong.

Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) and SWF will be co-hosting a district level seminar on “Youth and Education in Darjeeling” in October.
Some other good news to all members, a new unit of SWF is shortly being instituted in New Delhi.

Note:
Ø The proposed interactive sessions(wih minimum financial support by students) between tutors(college students) and students(Madhyamik Pariksha Examinee),which is to be held during winter vacation in a small scale(including some schools around Darjeeling) crucially depends upon the wider dedicated participation of the college students.
